Hearthstone

Hearthstone was a collaboration between artist Amber Cronin, Cedric Varcoe and Anika Gardner for Goolwa Wharf.

Hearthstone celebrates the unique landscape and environmental aspects of Goolwa, a significant site for families through generations. This sculptural intervention by artists Amber Cronin and Anika Gardner, developed in collaboration with Ngarrindjeri artist Cedic Varcoe and the Alexandrina Council, acknowledges the ancient shoreline of the Goolwa district. It honors the intertwined stories of the Ngarrindjeri people and European settlers, integrating the natural elements, flora, and fauna of the Goolwa Waterfront Precinct. The artwork aims to evoke a sense of discovery and curiosity, inviting visitors to explore and develop a deeper relationship with the place.

Hearthstone features three main elements that harmonize with the natural landscape. The Family Gathering Nodes are circular granite forms etched with local Ngarrindjeri stories, symbolizing ancient meeting points and the Seven Sisters legend. The Reeds, crafted from stainless steel and bronze, represent the 18 Ngarrindjeri family groups and create playful, reflective spaces. Boulders, inspired by cockle shell forms, embody the site's deep-time history. Together, these elements create an immersive landscape intervention that connects visitors to the historical and cultural significance of Goolwa.

The metal fabrication of the brass and stainless steel poles was all done by Anika, through a 12 month residency at George St Studios.

This project was supported and commissioned by Helpmann Academy and the Langley Family, with thanks to Tom Golin, Kate Bohunnis and Martin and Muzz from Fab studios for fabrication advice.
